The City Government of Borongan has pledged its commitment to boosting the preparations being made for the upcoming 2024 Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) meet in a conference with DepEd – Borongan City Division at the latter’s office last Tuesday, Jan. 16.
The meeting, which aimed to create an avenue for the exchange of insights and comments on the city’s performance in the previous meet, also sought to identify issues in the current EVRAA groundwork for the city government’s intervention.
In his message, City Information Officer and Sports Coordinator Rupert Ambil assured the coaches that the LGU always listens to DepEd’s requests and pays attention to its students’ needs.
“We listen. Nakikinig po tayo. Lahat po ng sinasabi ng ating partner, which is DepEd, pinakikinggan po ‘yan ng City. And part po ng ating pakikinig is nagplaplano po tayo sa resources na meron tayo.”
Ambil added that Borongan City Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda asked to have everything documented, from the planning down to the culmination of this year’s EVRAA, as this would pave the way for Borongan’s optimum performance at the said sports event. The LGU’s representative further said that EVRAA is not solely DepEd’s concern, but also that of the entire city, hence the need for DepEd and the city government to work hand in hand for the success of such an endeavor.
“That’s why the mayor called me to document everything. Last year, pag sinabing EVRAA hindi lang naman DepEd ang pinag uusapan, it’s the city. So everyone bears the name, carrying the weight of representing the city. Sabi nga namin kung meron mang pagkukulang last year, ang pagkukulang at pagplaplano at pagtratrabaho ng magkasama. Hindi lang burden ng DepEd coaches and athletes ‘to. Ultimately, after the EVRAA performance last year, maraming nagsasabi na may fault ang city, may pagkukulang ang LGU. Nakikinig kami sa ganong comments that’s why we’re preparing and supporting our campaign.”
Meanwhile, OIC-Schools Division Superintendent for DepEd-Borongan City Division Edgar Tenasas encouraged the EVRAA coaches to give their all for the success of EVRAA 2024 and ignite a desire in the athletes’ hearts to perform well. For Tenasas, the coaches’ hard work is the best way to repay DepEd for its dedication to providing them with the necessary incentives. He likewise iterated the city government’s unwavering support of the EVRAA campaign by securing the supplies and facilities needed for the athletes’ participation at the event.
As part of the city government’s efforts to ensure the athletes’ and coaches’ well-being and maximum energy at the regionals, 524 boxes of food supplements from Pascual Lab were turned over to DepEd on the same day. This was done in fulfillment of DepEd’s request for the same last year.
Aside from the supplements, the sports facilities in the city have similarly been made available for the athletes’ training. This was announced by Ambil, who also encouraged the Borongan sports clubs using the same facilities to help the EVRAA athletes train. According to Ambil, doing so is only one of the many ways in which non-DepEd personnel can show their support for the kids.
The meeting and food supplement turnover follows the local government unit’s earlier involvement in the Dukwag Sports Festival which was held in November last year. The festival ultimately determined the athletes who will represent the city at the EVRAA meet in Ormoc this coming April. On top of the financial support and sports equipment set to be provided by the LGU, the presence of key city officials at the host city is also expected for the duration of the event.
