In preparation for the 2021 Philippine Surfing Championship Tour (PSCT), Borongan City spearheaded the turnover of 10 surfboards to the Surfriders Club of Eastern Samar (SCES) and inducted the new set of officers of the club, at the Surf Tower located at Baybay Boulevard, today, October 21.
With the combined effort of the executive and legislative officials of Borongan City and with the support of Department of Tourism Region 8 (DOT Eastern Visayas), SCES was able to train and produce 7 internationally accredited Surf Judges and 8 internationally accredited Surf Instructors, which makes Borongan the city that has the most number of accredited surf judges in the whole country.
During the event, Mr. Rupert Ambil II, former SCES President said, “It was the initiative of VM Emman Tiu Sonco and SPM Lyra Gel Agda Limbauan to complement the capacity building support of Mayor Jose Ivan C. Dayan Agda, via the donation of surfboards.”
City Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan C. Agda, the biggest supporter of this project, emphasized, “Our main objective is to make sure that we really establish this event, because we’re the only place that has surfing in the heart of the city.”
Mayor Agda also assured that the City Government will institutionalize not just the Surf City campaign but all other matters that will help the development of tourism and economic growth of Borongan.
Vice Mayor Emmanuel T. Tiu Sonco, also expressed his high hopes for the city to be renowned in the surfing industry not only in Eastern Samar but also worldwide.
One of the highlights of the event was Jesus Laurence Quitorio, the 2019 Surf in the City Skim Boarding Champion, who is the first accredited PWD Surf Instructor in the Philippines. He also passed the Water Search and Rescue (WASAR) Coast Guard Training and Basic Life Support (BLS) of Red Cross, without special consideration.
Last 2019, was the first time the tour was held in Borongan. The event today is special because after 2 years of not having a PSCT due to COVID-19, Borongan City is finally preparing for another Surf Competition that will be hosted by the SCES here in Borongan, this coming December 6-12, 2021.
