BORONGAN CITY STUDENTS JOURNOS JOIN BARANGAY HUB WORKSHOP

To nourish student journalists from various school publications in Borongan City, BarangayHub, an independent media outlet for fact checking and visual storytelling, partnered with Borongan City Information Office to administer fact-checkers and storytellers workshop, Wednesday, September 14.

The event commenced with the introduction of the BarangayHub Community by Lyf Managing Director and IMF Project Head, Bong Santisteban.

GMA award-winning journalist and UP Department of Journalism chair Prof. Kara David discussed the Basics of Visual Storytelling, an introductory guide to producing mini-documentaries featuring local stories during the session held at Teatro Ibabaonon, ESSU Main Campus, Borongan City.

“Our mission is to give our viewers a new pair of eyes with which to see the world…” said Prof. Kara David.

“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at also change,” added David in her talk.

Meanwhile, Fact-Checking 101: was talked through by the UP Diliman College of Mass Communication Associate Professor Prof. Yvonne Chua highlighting overview of the perils of misinformation and the ABCs of verifying false or misleading textual and visual claims.

Further, Lyf President and IMF Digital Information Specialist Voltaire Tupaz hosted a story conference exercise with the students from Eastern Samar State University, Eastern Samar National Comprehensive High School, Lalawigan National High School, Saint Mary’s College Borongan, Sta. Fe National High School and Samar State University.

With the theme “INE AN ATON ISTORYA: BarangayHub Workshop on Visual Storytelling and Fact-Checking”, the workshop intends to capacitate secondary and college journalists on compelling storytelling, content creation, and visual fact-checking with prominent names in journalism.

This event was organized in partnership between Borongan City Information Office; headed by Rupert Ambil, and Lyf Solutions, Inc. under the Initiative for Media Freedom– a five-year program implemented by Internews and funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) with the support of the American People.
