BORONGAN CITY INAUGURATES NEW DEPARTURE TERMINAL, USHERING IN A NEW ERA OF TRAVEL

Borongan City Airport’s new departure terminal was inaugurated on Monday, June 19, in Barangay Punta Maria, Borongan City. Starting in the first week of July, travelers departing from Borongan City will have the pleasure of utilizing the newly-opened Borongan Airport Departure Terminal. The terminal showcases a captivating architectural design with vibrant shades of green, symbolizing the city’s lush surroundings, and pink, representing the warmth and affection of the local community. Furthermore, the expanded terminal offers increased space and seating capacity to accommodate a larger number of passengers.

DepTerminal-Opening2The inauguration ceremony commenced with opening remarks from City VM Emman Tiu Sonco. Rupert Ambil, Borongan City Flight Operations Chairman and City Information Officer, then presented a report on flight operations. Ambil proudly announced, “In just six months since the maiden flight in December 2022, Borongan City flight operations have served a total of 4,022 passengers for both inbound (2,118 passengers) and outbound (1,126 passengers) flights, surpassing Siargao Island’s first three years with only 1,126 passenger movements.”

Captain Manuel Antonio Tamayo, Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), signed a memorandum of agreement with the LGU Borongan, demonstrating the CAAP’s commitment to constructing a new passenger terminal and maintaining and developing airport facilities.

“This inauguration of Borongan Airport’s new departure terminal is a testament to the commitment and vision of the local government officials,” stated Tamayo in his speech. He further emphasized that this is a historic milestone for the CAAP as it marks the first-ever partnership with a local government unit to contribute to a national agency for airport operations.

During the event, Dan Quincy Moquia, Airport Operations Head of PAL Express, and Ms. Cora Basada, representing the Lone District of Eastern Samar Cong. Maria Fe Abunda, Eastern Samar Gov. Ben P. Evardone, and Regional Director Maximo Aljibe, CHEDRO VIII, delivered messages of support and congratulatory speeches.

A notable highlight of the ceremony was the presence of Consul General Hideki Yamaji, Consulate-General of Japan in Cebu, who graced the opening of Borongan Airport’s new departure terminal and the commencement of cargo operations. Hon. Yamaji, all the way from Japan, emphasized the significance of air cargo operations in fostering balanced economic growth and development for the city.

The ceremony concluded with closing remarks from City Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda, who expressed immense pride in the entire team’s dedication to transforming the vision of creating a gateway to economic prosperity for Borongan City into a reality.

Also, as part of the ceremony, a commemorative plaque for the new departure terminal building was unveiled by LGU Borongan Officials and department heads, the Office of the Congressman, Provincial Government of Eastern Samar, CAAP, Philippine Airlines, and other esteemed guests.

The completion of this remarkable project marks a significant milestone as LGU Borongan strives to surpass passengers’ expectations and establish itself as one of the leading tourism destination airports in the country.
