In a significant step to boost its sports program and support student-athletes after the Regional Athletic meet momentum, Borongan City has turned over movable basketball rings from the People’s Center (JTR) to Lalawigan National High School (LNHS) that aims to improve training conditions for the school’s athletes, particularly the basketball team of Borongan City Golden Sunrise Warriors, on May 16, Thursday.
The Golden Sunrise Warriors basketball team recently clinched a silver medal at the Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) Meet 2024. Their intense match had the LNHS collective and the entire City of Borongan holding their breaths as they competed against the homecourt pride of Ormoc City.
Despite facing challenging training conditions, including the lack of proper facilities on campus, the team demonstrated perseverance and dedication by frequently practicing at nearby barangay courts. The team’s remarkable spirit and dedication have made their school, their delegation, and the entire City proud.
This gesture was initiated by City Sports Coordinator and Information Officer Rupert Ambil who facilitated the request for the transfer that received swift approval from Mayor Dayan Agda . This new facility is expected to significantly enhance the training capabilities of the student-athletes.
Lalawigan National High School Principal, Noime A. Villarino, expressed gratitude towards the City Government, emphasizing that this donation would not only encourage current athletes but also inspire non-athletes to engage in basketball and other sports.
“I am very thankful, very grateful to the Borongan City Government for giving us the movable [basketball] rings, this will really help our learners who are sports enthusiasts, and this will encourage our learners who are not so sports enthusiasts to be sporty…Magkakamayda na hira gamit, sana this will inspire you my dear learners to strive for gold to strive for victory dahil meron na kayong facility na magagamit,” Villarino said.
The City’s commitment to nurturing its athletes reflects a broader effort to enhance local sports infrastructure and support youth development. This step is a testament to Borongan’s dedication to fostering a vibrant and competitive sports environment for its young athletes to further excel and achieve greater heights in all sports present in the regional athletic meet.
Present at the turn-over were City Information Officer and Sports Coordinator Rupert Ambil, LNHS principal Noime Villarino, Basketball Coach Esteban Palce IV and Rex Mosende, Assitant Coach.
Borongan City landed 10th place in the 2024 EVRAA with 5 gold, 9 silver, and 9 bronze medals.
