The City Government of Borongan, through the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) headed by CSWD Officer Verina Amoyo, held a series of creativity contests on mental health awareness at the Borongan People’s Center yesterday, December 20.
Painting, video-making, and spoken poetry competitions were opened to the city youth where the participants each expressed their thoughts on mental health through their outputs.
The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placers for all three contests were each given Php 8,000, Php 5,000, and Php 3,000 as cash prizes, respectively. Unplaced participants were also given Php 1,000 worth of consolation prizes.
In her message, Assistant City Social Welfare and Development Officer Danielle Ampong stressed the importance of holding such an event to the city’s aim of destigmatizing mental health awareness among Boronganons, especially given the rise of suicide cases in the city. She further stated that mental health is just as important as physical health and that symptoms of depression and other psychological afflictions should be given prompt attention.
Present at the said event were City Councilor and chairman of the Committee on Health and Sanitation Hon. Anna Katrina Anacta-Sadac, Borongan Sangguniang Kabataan Federation President Hon. Jimuel Adona, and Maria Chantal Mercado of the Borongan City Information Office who served as judges for the video-making and spoken poetry contests.
Meanwhile, local artists Nel Agda, Carisha Yabora, and Edmund Balan judged the painting contest held earlier that day at the CSWDO building.
A socials segment was held following the program where local bands Cosmic Denogram, E-lash, Maria, Maleyssia, and CD and the Goons entertained the participants with a select set of songs.
