GUARDIAN OF HOPE: LORNA ALEGRE, PADUL-ONG VOLUNTEER MEDIC

Amidst the vibrant costumes and pulsating rhythms of the annual Padul-ong Festival, there stands a guardian of hope, ready to lend a helping hand when the festivities take an unexpected turn. Meet Lorna Alegre, a 52-year-old volunteer medic whose unwavering dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of festival-goers has become a beacon of inspiration.

The Padul-ong Festival is a grand celebration that captures the rich cultural heritage of Borongan City. It draws crowds from far and wide, all eager to witness the performances that pay homage to the city’s history and traditions. However, with the heat and the unpredictable weather changes, the need for a vigilant medic like Mrs. Lorna Alegre becomes abundantly clear.

During the height of the Padul-ong Festival Competition yesterday, three dancers fainted because of the heat. Mrs. Alegre was there, ready to spring into action. With years of experience and a heart brimming with compassion, she rushed to their aid, providing the vital care they needed.

“Kailangan [hin] preparasyon talaga pagna-attend hin sugad hin nga mga okasyon,” she reminds us, her voice seasoned with wisdom.

“Kaulangan kumaon ka hin maupay antes ka umattender, kondisyon iton imo lawas, maupay it im katurog,” she added.

Mrs. Alegre’s decision to volunteer as a medic during the Padul-ong Festival, even though her specialization focuses on laboratory, is a testament to her selflessness and dedication to her community.

“Nagvolunteer ak kay sugad hin yana na patron, may-ada Padul-ong Festival. Dara hit kadamo hit tawo, dire ta maiiwasan nga meda mahimatay,” she said with concern in her voice. “That’s why kaulangan meda ta kanan medic,” she emphasized.

Lorna Alegre’s presence reminds us that some work silently to ensure our safety and well-being amidst the glitz and glamour of our cultural celebrations. Her actions inspire us to embrace our cultural heritage with open hearts while looking out for one another, even in adversity.
