Borongan City in Eastern Samar is the first LGU in Region 8 to be assisted by DOST for their Smart City Project. DOST Regional Office No.VIII, in collaboration with the Department of Information and Communications Technology – DICT, is fully committed to providing support for the initiative. Eastern Samar State University will also serve as a partner in the implementation of the project, with Dr. Betchie Aguinaldo from Isabela State University serving as a valuable resource person.
Recently, a workshop was conducted, attended by all department heads, to map out the Smart City Project of Borongan. The workshop aimed to identify the key areas where technology can be applied to improve public services, enhance public safety, and optimize resource management in the city.
The Smart City Project of Borongan City aims to integrate various technologies such as IoT, AI, and Big Data Analytics to improve the delivery of public services. The project will involve the deployment of various smart technologies such as smart traffic management systems, digital payment systems, and a city-wide Wi-Fi network. The DOST will provide technical assistance and resources to the LGU in implementing the project.
The success of the Smart City Project in Cauayan City, Isabela, the first LGU in the Philippines to implement the initiative, serves as an inspiration for other LGUs to adopt similar initiatives. The project involved the deployment of various smart technologies and was aimed at improving public services and enhancing the overall quality of life in the city.
With the support of the DOST, DICT, and other government agencies, more cities and municipalities in the Philippines are expected to adopt smart city technologies to enhance their local communities. The Borongan City Smart City Project is expected to bring significant benefits to the city, such as increased efficiency in government operations, better access to information and services, and improved quality of life for the citizens.
