More than 800 participants from different Local Government Units and Disaster Response Teams participate in the 2022 Regional Rescue Jamboree (RRJ) Opening Ceremony, today, June 21 at Baybay Boulevard, Borongan City.
The five-day activity aims to enhance disaster preparedness and response skills among teams all over the region.
During the opening, Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda, emphasized the importance of extending knowledge and skills training to the barangay level as rescue volunteers.
“Kailangan magtalaga ng rescue volunteers sa mga barangay para sila ang mag handle ng mga accidents habang ang ating taga CDRRMO ay paparating na,” Mayor Agda suggested.
The suggestion of Mayor Agda was related to the idea of Lord Byron Torrecarion, Regional Director, Office of the Civil Defense.
“We must armor ourselves with education and knowledge how to deal with the aftermath because it’s an accepted fact that this vocation requires lifelong training. Preparation for education is less costly than learning tragedy. There is no harm in hoping for the best, if we have prepared for the worst,” RD Torrecarion said.
Nelson Cortez, representative of Gov Ben P. Evardone, assured support to the event from the provincial government. “Malaking tulong ito sa amin para sa aming disaster management kasi nga nagiging typhoon and flooding destinations ang aming probinsya,” he said.
The event Director of 2022 RRJ, Rey M Gozon declared the commencement of the 5-day activity, and Mr Rogel Bert Baillo from ESSU-Main Campus and Mrs Lea C. Aberia from Borongan City Division, graced the affair.
The SP members headed by VM Emman Tiu Sonco and the LGU-Department Heads were in full force supporting the event too.
Meanwhile, Mayor Agda notably remarked to the participants he will undoubtedly welcome the idea of hosting RRJ again in 2023 and 2024.
