In a recent communication in reply to the letter of concern from the Most Reverend Bishop of Borongan Crispin B. Varquez, Mayor Dayan Agda assured the good Bishop that “peryahans” will not be allowed to operate before and during the Fiesta of Borongan that celebrates the Nativity of the Blessed Virigin Mary.
“Peryahans” used to be dominated by various attractions such as rides of different kinds and games that enliven, if not intensify, the already festive atmosphere of fiestas.
However, today, “peryahans” have regressed into a pure gambling activity that runs counter to the very reason and purpose of the celebration of fiestas.
Through the years, it decayed into a breeding ground for vices that defy and offend the moral sensibilities of the community.
Fiestas or feasts originated in religious celebrations or ritual commemorations that usually included sacred community meals. In essence, fiestas are celebrations of faith.
In a recent news article published by ESTE News, Bishop Varquez expressed his gratituted towards Mayor Agda for continuing the policy of prohibiting the operations of “peryahans” before and during the Borongan Fiesta Celebration.
